Aqara G4 Setup: Chime Pairing, Power and Recording Costs
Check the G4 factory-paired chime, two power requirements, placement guidance and extra costs for local recording or HomeKit Secure Video.

Short answer: The Aqara G4 is a candidate for an Apple Home household if you can place and power its supplied indoor Chime Repeater near the entrance. Choose the recording arrangement before ordering: local continuous recording needs wired doorbell power and a separately bought microSD card; HomeKit Secure Video needs an eligible iCloud+ plan and a home hub. Our buying judgment: confirm those requirements and the supplied pair first, especially if replacing an existing wired chime.
Choose the recording arrangement first
| What you want | What the published requirements say | What this does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Local continuous recording | Aqara specifies wired powering mode and a microSD card in the indoor repeater. It supports up to 512 GB; the card is not included. | Battery-only doorbell power does not meet that condition. Capacity alone does not tell us your recording retention. |
| Apple event recordings | Apple requires an iCloud+ subscription held by you or your Family Sharing group and a home hub. Its Home app history covers the last 10 days of activity. | This is not a claim that Apple stores the G4's continuous local recording. |
| A functioning replacement door chime | The G4 includes its own indoor Chime Repeater. | The included unit does not establish that a different, existing mechanical chime can be retained. |
Sources: Aqara's G4 recording conditions, Apple's HomeKit Secure Video setup requirements and recording guide. The storage choices above are separate requirements, not a test showing that one gives better footage.
Apple's current camera allowances are one camera on 50 GB, up to five on 200 GB and unlimited cameras on 2 TB or above. Check the cameras and plan already used by your household before adding another subscription. We are not quoting a subscription price or assuming that every household needs an upgrade.
The supplied repeater is part of the purchase
The G4 manual linked by Aqara's support center says the doorbell pairs only with the Chime Repeater it was shipped with, and vice versa. PDF page 11 also says they are paired before leaving the factory and cannot be mixed and reused with other doorbells. For a used, open-box or replacement purchase, our recommendation is to verify that it is the original matched pair; do not assume an arbitrary spare repeater will work.
The same manual directs the repeater to be connected to the network first, after which the outdoor doorbell connects to it. The G4 specification lists 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Good phone reception outside therefore does not, by itself, verify the complete G4 connection path.
Check the proposed positions before permanent mounting
On PDF page 5, Aqara recommends the indoor repeater within a horizontal distance of 5 m or less from the entrance-door wall, and a linear distance within 20 m of the router. Those are placement recommendations in that manual, not a guaranteed radio range through your walls. Its instructions say to connect the device to the network before installation.
Our acceptance check: try the matched pair at the intended indoor and outdoor positions before fixing it permanently. Press the doorbell, check that the indoor chime rings, then check live view and a saved event in the recording system you selected. Keep these as separate observations: hearing a chime alone does not verify that a clip was saved. We have not run this test on a real G4 installation.
Use the live connection result to assess the chosen location; do not turn the published distance into a promise that every gate or thick-walled entry will work. If keeping your old wired chime is essential, resolve its exact compatibility before purchasing the G4.
Keep the two power requirements separate
Aqara's US specifications list six AA 1.5 V LR6 batteries for the outdoor unit, or external power of 12–24 V AC at 0.2 A, 50/60 Hz, or 8–24 V DC at 0.5 A. The repeater needs a 5 V / 1 A USB supply. Identify both supplies in your plan. These numbers are published requirements, not confirmation that an existing transformer, chime circuit or adapter is suitable.
The box-content list includes a chime cable; it does not establish that a wall adapter is included in every retailer bundle. Check the bundle contents before adding an adapter to the order. This guide does not provide a wiring conversion procedure.
Make the extra-cost list for your chosen setup
For local continuous recording, record the price of the matched G4 kit, a suitable microSD card, any missing power supply and any required installation work. For Apple event recordings, check whether you already own an eligible home hub and plan; list only the additional hardware or subscription charge you would actually incur. On battery power, replacement batteries are another expense, but we have no measured replacement interval to turn into an annual figure.
Our worksheet is simply upfront setup cost = kit checkout total + missing power hardware + chosen storage hardware + quoted installation work + any required home hub. Each input comes from your actual cart, existing equipment and installer quote. List ongoing plan and battery costs separately; don't mix them into a one-time purchase total.
Check the current G4 kit and offer. Confirm the matched pair and accessories before comparing the price. The separate quote below does not include an assumed memory card, home hub or installation package.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pair any spare G4 Chime Repeater with the doorbell?
The checked G4 manual says the doorbell and repeater are factory-paired and cannot be mixed with other units. Verify the original matched pair before buying used or replacement parts.
Can a battery-only G4 record continuously to microSD?
Aqara states that 24/7 local recording requires wired powering mode. A microSD card alone does not meet that condition.
Does hearing the chime confirm that Apple saved a recording?
No. Check a saved event separately in the recording system you selected; chime operation alone is not that verification.
The buying decision
We would consider the G4 after confirming a workable repeater position, a complete matched kit and the recording setup the household wants. If an existing chime must remain or a remote gate is the only mounting location, settle that installation question first. None of the specifications here establishes performance at your entrance.
